September 18, 2017 – It was a full house at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre for the inaugural game of the new Heartland Dragons Hockey Association. The Opening Ceremony of the very first Mississauga Hockey League game for the Heartland Dragons was commemorated with a ceremonial puck drop followed by a graceful rendition of our national anthem by Mileena Sobreira-Yousufy.
The red carpet was rolled out for several key VIPs such as: Dan Tanaka, President of the new Heartland Dragons Hockey Association of Mississauga, Brian Scarlett, President of the Mississauga Hockey League, and James Richmond Head Coach of the OHL Mississauga Steelheads (also two-time OJHL Coach of the Year, and former player development staff of the 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings). Let us not forget to mention two fan favorites, “Sauga” the Steelheads mascot, who was in attendance with the new Heartland Dragon mascot!
The battle of the evening was between our own two Heartland Dragon Minor Peewee “A” teams! Coach Jean Richer’s team #60 and coach Robert Day’s team #61. It was a fast-paced and entertaining game between two great teams. It was an excellent matchup in a back and forth competition that ended in a 2-2 draw.
Thank you to the tireless work of the Heartland Dragon Board of Directors who have been working overtime to ensure a successful kickoff of our inaugural season. Thanks to the players and their coaches for such a great game, and thank you to all the parents and relatives who support our teams and this great game we love.
